For one reason or another, I convinced myself to create an entire fictional language when writing Birth of Blackheart. Has it made my world more rich and exciting? I darn sure hope so.
The first of many languages that came to me was the heavy-sounding Verisi (Veriotz, as the wonderful Shushana would correct me). At first, I really didn’t know how I wanted the language to sound, and much less how I wanted to approach its alphabet. I debated whether to imitate one of the many human dialects, with similar vowels, letters, and pronunciations. I also tossed an idea around to have it be something never before seen. How did I decide? It was simple. I looked at the Veri objectively, and based on a myriad of factors, I asked myself the following question.
How would these dark-skinned, feline-looking creatures come to life? How would the sounds of their powerfully-projected voices cause others to whimper?
And so Verisi was born, a language far older than any human dialect, was born. I’ll be adding the Verisi alphabet soon, but for now, I’ll leave you with the vowels and consonants.

As the title states, this is only Part 1 of my On building a language from scratch series. Each post should go deeper into the madness that is Ashkar.
It has finally happened. After months of preparation, my first novel, Birth of Blackheart, has released! This is definitely a momentous day in my life. I hope you all enjoy reading the novel as much as I enjoyed writing it.
I’d like to take a moment to discuss some things Birth of Blackheart. First and foremost, I would like to go off the record that the novel will be available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Sony, and many other book retailers soon. In addition, this is my first book, and I’m sure it still needs a lot of work. My promise to you, the reader, is that every new book will be better than its predecessor. If you’re on the fence of purchasing, go ahead and check out the free sample (40% of the novel for free!). I’d love to hear your opinions!
I’ll be taking the next week off from any form of writing (including blog posts). I should be able to squeeze in a second post this week, hopefully by Thursday or Friday. What will be the contents of this post, you may be asking? I was thinking along the lines of…the Veri alphabet.
Again, I would like to thank everyone who has helped me make this a reality. I hope you’ll become a part of this, too.
Hello, my name is Shant Karadjian, and I enjoy creating fantastical worlds of magic and intrigue.
A long time ago, when we were teens, my brother (Kayl) and I dreamed of telling stories about man-eating demons and epic battles of sword fighting and spell slinging. Back then, our naive eyes were set on providing these tales through comics. We were so engrossed in comic books and manga that we salivated at the thought of creating our own comic. But neither of us were particularly talented with the visual arts, and sooner than I care to admit, we had given up. From time to time we would revisit our dreams with new-found hope to one day publish our work, building upon the world in which our characters would thrive–or die. Over the years this world of ours continued to grow until it became what it is today: Ashkar. And one evening, as I enjoyed my read of an article about fantasy literature, it dawned onto me to express Ashkar through writing. Ever since that moment, I have worked tirelessly to pen (more like type!) our lore onto the pages of my first novel Birth of Blackheart. It’s been a long road, but we’ve finally arrived.
I would like to take this time to welcome you to our website. You will find that as time passes, these pages will be filled with more information about us (Kayl and I), about our world (Ashkar), and our novels. Just to be clear, Kayl and I will be writing separately, though our characters and their adventures will occur within the same world. I’d also like to let you in on our plans for the blog posts that follow. Things to look forward to are: book updates, author interviews, character interviews (more on this later), fan giveaways, lore dumps, behind-the-making tidbits, book reviews and so much more! We hope you enjoy what we have to offer.
Personally, I plan to write here twice a week, so stay tuned! I’m sure Kayl will post on days I don’t.
If you’re not aware, the first novel of my Rise of the Executioner trilogy will be out soon. I’d love for you to give it a read and let me know what you think with some honest reviews! You’ll find it on most online retailers!
